Buying better

Buy the right thing, once

A short checklist for asking a better question before you order a cable, accessory or piece of equipment.

A little more useful.

Describe the job before the product

“I need a cable” is a starting point. “I need to connect this laptop to this monitor” is a much better brief. Write down what you want to do, the devices involved, their exact models and where you will use them. A photo of the relevant ports can help; keep private information out of it.

Ask for the exact option

Before agreeing to buy, ask for the brand, model, specifications, quantity and what is included. Confirm compatibility with the manufacturer’s information. For a sourcing request, the category illustration is not a promise of a particular product. The confirmed quotation should identify what you will receive.

Read the whole quote

Check the item price, delivery charge, collection options, expected availability and return or warranty terms. Ask what happens if the supplied item differs from the agreed description. Keep the quotation and order confirmation together. If an answer is missing, resolve it before paying.

Keep a good thing going.
