Know which equipment you manage
Identify your router and whether your internet provider manages it. Use its official instructions or ask your provider before changing settings. A router label, administrator account and Wi-Fi password can serve different purposes.
Review the basics
Check for supported software updates, a strong administrator password and current Wi-Fi encryption. The FTC recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. Consider a guest network for visitors where your router supports it.
Make changes you can explain
Keep a simple record of what you change and how to reconnect your own devices. An unfamiliar device name deserves checking, but does not by itself prove someone is spying. If coverage or reliability is the issue, describe where it happens before buying new equipment. Ask for help when a setting is unclear.
